Flashback to 2012

I'm back at school! I missed everyone over break and it was so nice to catch up this past week. I'm settling into all my classes and hopefully this semester will be even more eventful than the last. As I heard about everyone's Chrismas and New Year's Eve stories, I couldn't help but think back to last year's "winter break" in India. It was the first Christmas/New Year's Eve I had spent away from home and my parents so I was fully prepared to do something bold and have a ball but it didn't quite end up that way.

It's been a fantastic year - I can't believe how quickly it's gone by! It feels like just the other day that I was ringing in 2013 in India last year...

I'm finally in college! I've officially moved in and settled down in my new home at Christopher Newport University. I've been looking forward to this all summer. Everyone's been asking me what I'm most excited about and people usually expect things like "I'm finally free from home!" or "Party all the time!" or just being independent. But I'm actually most excited about starting my classes and getting work done.

Lame, I know. But I wasn't always like this! I was actually not a fan of school at all until a few months ago.

Food is Love

I am currently on vacation in the mountains in upstate New York so I'm trying to spend less time with the electronics and more time with nature and family, but I just had to put my two cents on here before snoozing on a hammock.

We drove up here from DC and it took us a good 6 hours to reach this giant house in the middle of nowhere. And since the closest grocery store is 20 miles away, we figured it would be a good idea to take a few food items for the first 2 days and buy the rest there. Apparently that translated into taking half our kitchen. So the morning of our departure, we are faced with 4 bags of clothes, 2 backpacks, my sister's guitar and 6 bags of food.

I don't know if this applies to all ethnic groups but any Indian event, holiday or gathering is focused around the food. I think it's the funniest thing in the world.

After finishing high school in June 2012, I chose to spend a year abroad in India volunteering, working, traveling, and "finding myself". The experience was unbelievable, surreal, humbling and all the other cliched adjectives that usually come with spending time abroad. Family and culture are a big part of who I am and spending time in India only strengthened my bond with the motherland.
